In 2014, Sula Rubens was appointed as the first ever Artist in Residence at the Michaelhouse in Trinity Street, Cambridge. Founded in the 14th Century, the second oldest college in Cambridge, the Michaelhouse sits among the colleges of the university at the heart of the city.
Sula spent much of her Residency working on site. Through drawing, she engaged with and observed the people as well as the architecture.
“Michaelhouse intrigued me. I became aware of how it’s architectural layers have evolved, both as a building and as a central focus in the lives, culture and identity of it’s people.”
She researched stories of the Michaelhouse past and present, and immersed herself in the everyday life of the building, uncovering a distinctive culture of worship, hospitality and culture. Her work depicts many of the architectural features of St. Michael’s church and the activities that take place throughout the building (recitals, communion services, choir rehearsals, meetings and concerts.)
The Residency concluded with a solo exhibition of the paintings, drawings and collages made during the Residency.
