Interior with Figures is a series of works on paper made while living in an ancient farmhouse in the Dordogne, France in 1992. Initially, the intention was to paint outside in the landscape there. However the early spring was cold and wet and Sula found herself working indoors. In her studio, hanging on the wall, above the stove, was an old, grainy mirror. Through this mirror she saw a mysterious space beyond her own presence, where a figure or parts of a figure might appear.
